Developing Physiologic Models for Emergency Medical Procedures Under Microgravity

NASA Tech Briefs, September 2012 as mechanical noise to the soles of the feet, or when applied as electrical noise at the knee and to the back muscles. SR using imperceptible stochastic electrical stimulation of the vestibular system (stochastic vestibular stimulation, SVS) applied to normal subjects has shown to improve the degree of association between the weak input periodic signals introduced via venous blood pressure receptors and the heart-rate responses. Also, application of SVS over 24 hours improves the long-term heart-rate dynamics and motor responsiveness as indicated by daytime trunk activity measurements in patients with multi-system atrophy, Parkinson’s disease, or both, including patients who were un responsive to standard therapy for Parkinson’s disease. Recent studies conducted at the NASA JSC Neurosciences Laboratories showed that imperceptible SVS, when applied to normal, young, healthy subjects, leads to significantly improved balance performance during postural disturbances on unstable compliant surfaces. These studies have shown the benefit of SR noise characteristic optimization with imperceptible SVS in the frequency range of 0–30 Hz, and amplitudes of stimulation have ranged from 100 to 400 microamperes. The Role of Microgravity in Cancer: A Dual-edge Sword
Since human beings could travel beyond the earth atmosphere, scientists started to investigate the effect of microgravity on human cells. Microgravity has different effects on normal and cancer cells, but the related mechanisms are not well-known till now. The aim of the present review is to focus on the consequences of exposing the cancer cells to reduced gravity. Some cancer cells organize th...

متن کاملComputational Simulation of Hydrodynamic Convection in Rising Bubble Under Microgravity Condition
In this work, rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a conventional finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The interface was tracked explicitly by connected marker points via hybrid front capturing and tracking method. One field approximatio...
متن کاملEvaluating Trauma Sonography for Operational Use in the Microgravity Environment
Sonography is the only medical imaging modality aboard the ISS, and is likely to remain the leading imaging modality in future human space flight programs. While trauma sonography (TS) has been well recognized for terrestrial trauma settings, the technique had to be evaluated for suitability in space flight prior to adopting it as an operational capability. The authors found the following four-...

INTRODUCTION One of the primary purposes of congenital and adult cardiovascular medicine and surgery is to restore blood flow to organs and tissues. Ideally, therapeutic procedures result in sufficient blood flow at appropriate physiologic pressures while avoiding adverse flow conditions including flow recirculation and stasis, low shear stress, and high temporal oscillations and spatial gradie...
